PART 1: Before You Buy Anything New: 7 Steps to a Stylish and Functional Home
Share
You’ve styled it. Tidied it. Yet something still feels off.
Adding more doesn’t automatically make your home better. In fact, the opposite is often true. A cluttered, mismatched, or unconsidered space can feel heavy, chaotic, or unsettled - even if it’s full of beautiful things.
Before rushing to buy another cushion, basket, or decor piece, start with editing, intention, and simplicity. These are the tools that lay the foundation for a home that actually feels calm, functional, and beautiful.
Step 1 – Start Small, Pick a “Quick Win” Space
Some spaces have an outsized effect on how your home feels. Choose just one area to begin with, make it a high-impact area:
- Your entryway: This is the first thing you see when you walk in, and the first impression for anyone visiting.Your bedroom:
- A place meant for rest and retreat; the energy here affects your entire day.
Tackle a space like this first. A small space, carefully cleared and considered, can make a bigger impact than redecorating your entire home at once. One quick win sets the tone for your whole home.
Step 2 – Ask the Right Questions
Decluttering is more than just tidying. To decide what stays and what goes, ask yourself:
- Do I use this?
- Do I love this?
- Does it make life easier or lighter?
- Does it spark joy?
- If this item was lost or broken, would I buy this again today?
- Does it belong in this space?
If the answer is “no” to any of these, it’s time to let it go. Thoughtful questioning keeps the process intentional rather than emotional or haphazard.

Step 3 – Let Go Thoughtfully
Once you’ve identified what no longer serves you, release it in a way that honours the items: donate, sell, or gift them. Also, i'm giving you permission to throw stuff out! If it's been siting broken for years, let's face facts, it's likely you won't fix it. Throw. it. out.
Do you sometimes worry that getting rid of things is wasteful? It's important to realise that it's actually wasteful to hang onto something that you never use, someone else could be using it! Free some space by moving items along to someone who won't waste them, and you'll no longer be wasting precious real estate in your home!
Letting go can feel difficult, especially when there’s sentimental attachment or perhaps you have a scarcity mindset...but remember: every time you release something, it creates space, not just physically, but mentally. A home with less clutter allows your mind to breathe.
Step 4 – Work With What You Have
Before adding anything new, take time to see what you already own in a fresh light. Rearrange, refresh, and repurpose items:
- Layer cushions differently.
- Shop your home.
- Move pieces between rooms to uncover new possibilities.
- Give your linens a good wash - fresh fabric transforms a space like nothing else.
Small tweaks can make a room feel entirely new without a single purchase. Sometimes, you already have exactly what you need.
Step 5 – Identify Gaps
Once your home feels lighter, step back and observe. What’s missing? What could improve comfort, function, or flow?
Look for:
- Comfort – is the space truly relaxing? Does it need some cozy textures? cushions, throws, fresh curtains? A new rug?
- Warmth – does it feel inviting? Soft? One simple hack is to switch out your cushion inserts for feather inserts. So lux, comfy & inviting!
- Function – does it support daily life? Is your storage adequate? Are you surfaces clear & available to use when necessary? (drop zone baskets help with this for items such as mail, keys, wallets, loose change etc)
- Light & mood – is the atmosphere pleasant throughout the day? Open windows/curtains and embrace natural light & fresh air. For evenings, is there a need for some soft lighting, lamps etc?
- Flow & ease – can you move naturally through the room? Or is there some bulky furniture that needs to go!
Walk into the room as if you were a guest. Take note of what feels off and what would make life simpler or more enjoyable.
Step 6 – Be Intentional
Now, when you do choose to fill a gap, do it with intention. Only fill gaps that truly matter ensuring you are leaving adequate negative space. Negative space is the empty space around objects in a room — the breathing room between furniture, décor, and surfaces. It’s important because it allows the eye to rest, making a space feel calmer, more intentional, and more beautiful. Without negative space, even lovely pieces can feel crowded or chaotic.
Only add pieces that:
- Solve a real need.
- Add warmth or texture.
- Simplify rather than complicate.
- Work harmoniously with what you already own.
Less is more. Choose fewer, better pieces. Thoughtful selection over abundance creates a home that feels calm, curated, and effortless. Simplicity isn’t about minimalism for its own sake, it’s about creating a space that supports your life best.
Step 7 – Don’t Forget to LIVE
Your home isn’t a showroom. It’s a place to live, laugh, and make memories.
Sit in the sun. Read a book.
Nap. Pray. Meditate.
Sip tea slowly.
Laugh with family.
Create experiences.
Gratitude transforms a simple, well-edited home into a beautiful, soulful home.
What's next?
